Neurofeedback books … to learn neurofeedback

Neurofeedback books … to learn neurofeedback

What books to read and where to start: the definitive list

Usually, many neurofeedback books are tough and expensive. On the other hand, many of them are just reports of success cases with lower scientific value. Do not waste your time and money reading the neurofeedback book that does not fit with you. Discover the best titles below.

Types of neurofeedback books

Among the thirty neurofeedback books you can find on online bookstores I have selected 15 titles, of which I have read the vast majority. I have classified them into three different groups, keeping in mind what you may be looking for.

#1 Novels

If you have not already entered the neurofeedback field, I recommend that you read some of these light essays first, which do not deepen into practical, technical or scientific features. These neurofeedback books are ideal to get an idea of what neurofeedback is and to find out success stories in many therapeutic applications. If you are a therapist wondering if neurofeedback can help you heal your patients, here is a good way to start.

Tip #1: do not read them if you are already a neurofeedback provider

Hill, R., Castro, E. (2009). Healing Young Brains: The Neurofeedback Solution. Hampton Roads Publishing Company Swingle-Swingle, P. (2008). Biofeedback for the Brain: How Neurotherapy Effectively Treats Depression, ADHD, Autism, and More. Rutgers University Press-brain Fisher, S. (2014). Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: Calming the Fear-Driven Brain. W. W. Norton & Company

Robbins, J. (2008) . A Symphony in the Brain: The Evolution of the New Brain Wave Biofeedback. Grove Press Larsen, S. (2012) The Neurofeedback Solution: How to Treat Autism, ADHD, Anxiety, Brain Injury, Stroke, PTSD, and more. Healing Arts Press Larsen, S. (2006). The Healing Power of Neurofeedback: The Revolutionary LENS Technique for Restoring Optimal Brain Function. Healing Arts Press

#2 Neurofeedback handbooks

If you have already taken the step forward entering the world of neurofeedback by acquiring a neurofeedback device, do not settle for just attending the course recommended by the manufacturer. These useful handbooks are books that cover everything you need to know about history, neurophysiology, brain waves, instrumentation, components, protocols and practice of neurofeedback.

Tip #2: you will find a BCIA certification exam in Thompson’s book

Collura, T. (2013). Technical Foundations of Neurofeedback. Routledge Demos, J. (2005) . Getting started with Neurofeedback. W.W.Norton & Company Thompson, M., Thompson, L. (2015). The Neurofeedback Book: An Introduction to Basic Concepts in Applied Psychophysiology. 2nd Edition. Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback

#3 Scientific reviews

These scientific reviews are directed by outstanding pioneers in the field of neurofeedback with the involvement of numerous renowned scientists. In addition to a review of neurofeedback basic foundations, these books compile the results of scientific publications of recent years on every clinical indication.

Tip #3: These books are more theoretical than practical, and ideal for scientific evidence lovers

Coben, R., Evans, J. (2011). Neurofeedback and Neuromodulation Techniques and Applications. Academic Press Budzynski, T., Kogan, H., Evans, J., Abarbanel, A. (2009). Introduction to Quantitative EEG and Neurofeedback: Advanced Theory and Applications. 2nd Edition. Academic Press

Thatcher, R., Lubar, J. (2015). Z Score Neurofeedback. Clinical Applications. Academic Press Cantor, D., Evans, J. (2014). Clinical Neurotherapy. Applications of Techniques for Treatment. Academic Press

#Bonus track

Although this is a handbook of biofeedback, neurofeedback’s  twin brother, this book is a comprehensive manual, with detailed tricks and recommendations that can also help you become a better neurofeedback provider.

Schwartz, M., Andrasik, F. (2016). Biofeedback. A Practitioners's Guide. (4th Edition). New York: The Guildford Press
